How one Colorado mom makes serious side hustle cash on Fluid Market

Sara is a super busy single mom of three kids. Beyond the daily madness of raising her children, Sara also has a part time job as an in-home health care provider. She was looking for a way to put a bit more cash in her pocket and heard about Fluid Market truck share. Sara joined the community as a lender about eight months ago and is now earning hundreds of extra dollars every month.

“Fluid Market has definitely become my favorite side hustle,” said Sara. “I’m making reliable cash by renting out my Ford F-250 pickup truck at least once per week. The best part is that lending my truck on Fluid Market requires almost none of my time — I’m simply managing my reservations through the mobile app and it couldn’t be easier.”

So how does Sara do it? First, she posted up pictures and a brief description of her vehicle via the Fluid Market app. She then set the rate at $6 per hour or $32 per day with unlimited mileage, a big plus for borrowers. Finally, Sara promotes her vehicle on Facebook, Nextdoor, and OfferUp to generate more visibility in the greater Denver community. Through this simple process, Sara is earning on average $500 in extra income per month by renting out her truck.

In addition to the profitability of her side hustle, Sara has made lasting connections in the community, as several of her regular renters use her vehicle to transport donations for local schools, homeless shelters, and others in need.

“As a Coloradan, there’s nothing better than to see my community helping each other out,” said Sara. “And as a mom raising her kids here, it absolutely makes my day to know that I’m contributing in a small way to strengthening our community ties.”

Celebrating two years of Fluid Market with a $25K donation to Denver non-profits

We launched Fluid Market in Denver just about two years ago, and our vibrant community of entrepreneurs, lenders and borrowers inspires us everyday. As we approach our second birthday, we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than to give back.

We’re proud to announce that we’re committing $25,000 in Fluid Market credit to non-profit organizations in the greater Denver metro area. Twenty-five organizations will receive $1000 of Fluid Market credit each to help further their mission. The wide variety of items available on Fluid Market can be incredibly helpful for local non-profits as they host events, transport their teams and goods around town, and run their daily operations.

Our partnership with Trips for Kids Denver Metro is a great illustration of how Fluid Market credit can help jumpstart charitable efforts. Trips for Kids Denver Metro is dedicated to giving underserved and at-risk youth the opportunity to experience and learn about the natural beauty of Colorado from the seat of a mountain bike. Fluid Market has partnered with Trips for Kids Denver Metro to provide box trucks to transport the bikes to the foothill and mountain parks that the kids explore.

Here’s the best part of our birthday gift: we’re looking to our Fluid Market community of lenders and borrowers in the Denver area to nominate local non-profits making a difference. Know a great local non-profit that could benefit from the items available on Fluid Market? Submit your nomination here by Friday, May 11 @ 5 PM MT. Our team will review nominations and announce the winners in weeks following.

Fluid Market is thrilled to give back to the Mile High City, and we thank you for your help in nominating fantastic local non-profits committed to improving our community.

No Time? These Side Hustles Don’t Require Any.

If you’re looking for ways to earn some extra cash with a side hustle, you’d likely encounter tons of ways to make more money. If you have a full-time job, children, or already have multiple jobs and very little spare time, most of those options aren’t realistic (unless you give up sleeping). At the end of the day, time is a precious commodity and most side hustles require it. For example, popular side hustle apps like Uber, Task Rabbit or Dolly can generate real money but are time suckers.

However, there are a number of side hustles that don’t require a lot. We’ve gone through the lists for you and found some side hustles that require little to no time. Check them out below and kick off your 2018 year with some extra money in your bank account!

Rent out property on AirBnb

If you have spare rooms, renting them out on AirBnB can really rake in some cash with minimal time spent. By taking advantage of features like minimum night stays and additional fees, the average AirBnB host makes anywhere from $850 — $950 a month. If you rent out two rooms at $800 a piece per month, you’ll have $19K by the end of the year.

Pro Tip: Read blog posts by hosts like this and read AirBnB’s host guide to get started, learn more about the process, and get insider tips.

Spend Money through Ibotta

The mobile app, Ibotta (also based in Denver!) helps you make money off your shopping or grocery receipts. It’s basically a rebate app, so you can earn anywhere from 25 cents to 5 dollars off everything you buy. Just buy the things you normally do and make money off your purchases!

You can connect your bank account or PayPal to Ibotta and get paid out within minutes of earning the rebate.

Pro Tip: If you’re a coupon-er, you can still use Ibotta and get a rebate for your purchases. This will often result in getting an item for free!

Rent out a pickup truck on Fluid Market

Fluid Market is a mobile app that allows you to make income off renting vehicles to your neighbors. Users can rent out anything from a pickup truck to a Tesla Model X — and they can offer it to borrowers for a hourly, daily, or weekly rate. The side hustle on a pick up truck is incredible —  with the average truck lender generating $500/month. This means you can buy a ten-year-old extended bed pickup truck for $4,000 (or $140/month financed over 3 years) off Craigslist, and start making $360/month or $4300/yr. Lenders often buy a few trucks and their numbers multiply exponentially!

To get started, read more on Fluid Market’s website — there’s a blog post specifically geared towards vehicle lenders.

The story of Fluid Market — and how you can make $1200/month renting out a box truck

“Why would I pay $18K for a company to move us from Virginia to Denver, when I could buy a box truck and do it myself cheaper?” Fluid Market’s founder, James Eberhard asked me. He and his family needed to relocate, but the moving fees were outrageous — as a DIY man, he decided to buy a box truck himself for $15K and pay a few contractors to help him with the heavy lifting. (Needless to say, his wife wasn’t very happy when he arrived home with this new toy — but that’s a whole other story.)

Once he got situated in Denver, he still had the box truck on his hands — instead of selling it, he decided to rent it out on his app, Fluid Market. For those who don’t know, Fluid Market allows you to make income off renting vehicles to your neighbors. Users can rent out anything from a pickup truck to a Tesla Model X — and they can offer it to borrowers for a hourly, daily, or weekly rate. Within the first 100 days he was in Denver he rented it out 50 times, at $75/day. He paid the box truck off within the first year, and continued renting it out after his payoff for profit.

Ironically, the moving company that helped James move into his Denver home ended up renting out that box truck to start their moving company. They couldn’t afford the cost of purchasing their own truck, so with the protection of Fluid Market’s insurance, rented the box truck for their jobs going forward. From there James purchased a few more box trucks (and convinced others to join him), and built Fluid Market into what it is today — a place where you can rent just about any type of vehicle or tool.

How can you also start making $1200/month on a box truck? It’s a lot easier than you think. Here’s how you can get started:

  1. Research Craigslist for 14′ to 24′ box trucks, or reach out to local branches of truck companies (like Penske or Uhaul) if they’re planning on selling any used trucks. The average purchase price is anywhere from $8K to $20K — once you list it on the app, you can rent it for $40 — $100/day to pay it off within the year.
  2. List the truck on the app — add photos, a description with specs, and your hourly/daily/weekly rates.
  3. Park the truck near an Amazon Fulfillment Center (for Amazon Flex Drivers to use), storage facility, or around your neighborhood (you’d be surprised at how many neighbors need to use it!).
  4. Fluid Market’s team is here to help: They provide their lenders with tips to promote their vehicles, where to find vehicles to purchase, and other lender tips to get your side hustle off the ground. They will also provide you with a tracking device and lockbox for autonomous lending!

Treat yourself with a free Tesla this year.

Teslas are all the buzz these days. With doors that open into what look like wings, to the zero noise they make when driving, owners of these cars are obsessed with them. The only downfall is it’s price — at a hefty price tag of $100K, it’s hard to justify buying one. But what if I told you that you could make monthly payments on a Tesla by renting it out on Fluid Market 7 days a month?

Fluid Market allows you to make income off renting vehicles to your neighbors. Users can rent out anything from their pickup truck to their Tesla Model X — and you can offer it to users for a hourly, daily, or weekly rate. The app manages all the payments and reservations so all you have to do is hand over the keys! In addition, the app protects each vehicle with $300,000 in liability and bodily injury/property damage insurance, and theft and physical damage up to $50,000.00 during the share period.

With an average daily earning of $200 on the app, after just 7 days of rentals you’ll be able to make your monthly loan payment of $1400. If you’re leasing, make sure to manage your mileage and set the rate in the app appropriately. With the Tesla power train lasting more than a million miles, this may not even be an issue!

We know the holiday is to treat other people, but why not treat yourself for a change? Buy yourself a Tesla this Christmas — but let others pay it off for you through Fluid Market. Get started today by downloading the app, creating a user profile, and list your vehicle.
